Originally I wanted to draw some rubble and dust around the hole in the cave wall on the left side, but it didn't really turn out the way I wanted it to, and in this final version only some soft haze remained of the original concept.
The glowing crystals on the other hand were planned already for the first picture, but didn't fit in there. In this second piece they have some more space and don't have to end up crammed into a corner. Glowing crystals are a thing in many Sonic games, and I always loved them because they're both pretty and mysterious.
